La Petite Robe Noire

posted Thursday, 19 March 2009
Guerlain's newest fragrance, La Petite Robe Noire, is a fruity gourmand with notes of Sicilian lemon, licorice, almond, rose, smoky tea, musk, and vanilla.

There's a quick burst of lemon at the opening that is immediately smothered by candied fruit and a dusty quality similar to violet/iris. Unfortunately, this lemon/dust quality reminds me a bit of Pledge.

Luckily, I always liked the smell of Pledge. And this sensation soon fades as a sweet cherry/almond note takes over. It's curiously...chewy...as if it emanated from a fat macaroon - not the delicate Frenchy kind, more like one of those nice soft Italian amaretti. (I'll have one with pine nuts, please!)

The more I wear LPRN, the more I like it. At first I thought it was going to smell cheap, like Insolence and its flanker, My Insolence, but on the contrary, LPRN is well-crafted and expensive-smelling. I, err, love it. I like the bottle too, except for the weird black dress silhouette on it, and the "edgy" lettering. You're Guerlain - just be elegant. That's ok.
